YS" exhibition by Benjamin Deroche (text by Philippe Le Guillou).

This double exhibition presents original works (photographic prints, oils on canvas) by Benjamin Deroche at the Centre d'interprétation - Les enclos in Guimiliau, as well as reproductions that can be seen in the photographic itinerary around the communes of the Landivisiau region.

Benjamin Deroche explores the Celtic legend of the town of Ys and uses it as the focal point of a photographic creation.
Drawing on a number of sources from the legend, including Émile Souvestre's Foyer Breton, Théodore de la Villamarqué's Barzaz Breiz and Charles Guyot's novel adaptation, Benjamin Deroche has produced an enchanting photographic series. From Douarnenez to the beaches of Sainte-Anne-la-Palud and Kervel, via Locronan, the Névet forest, Quimper, Le Huelgoat and Landévennec, the photographer has conducted an investigation. He has produced a kaleidoscopic work that recreates the magic he projected onto the territory he travelled through.
To create a magical fiction, the photographer uses a whole range of techniques, combining oil paint, medium format and old digital SLRs, Polaroids and Portra 400 film. This combination of colour and black-and-white images, precision of detail and magnificent blurred images, landscapes and faces, silver and oil paint, gives rise to a 'magical realism'.

Philippe Le Guillou is the author of the text recreating the legend. The exhibition at the Centre d'interprétation - Les enclos features extracts from his texts.

The "YS" project imagined by Benjamin Deroche and Emmanuelle Hascoët was created as part of a residency at the Port-musée de Douarnenez in 2022 and was piloted by Fovearts. The project was adapted for the Kiosque in Vannes in 2025 before being presented in the Landivisiau region in 2026.
