Built during the 14th and 15th centuries, the listed Château du Bois Orcan at Noyal-sur-Vilaine is an architectural gem from the ‘Golden Age of Brittany’. It has been totally restored to its original splendour which it owed to the cultured elegance of Julien Thierry, silversmith to Anne of Brittany. The chateau now houses a rare collection of medieval furniture, which includes some of the oldest pieces on display in Europe. In order to recreate the landscaped surroundings of the château at the end of the 15th century, Alain Richert created the ‘Jardin de la Fontaine de Vie’ which symbolises the art of living at the time of the Valois and includes both a Hortus Conclusus (walled garden for contemplation) and a Jardin d'Amour for meeting and entertainment. The Bois Orcan Estate is also the site of L'Athanor, a museum and park devoted to the sculpture of Etienne-Martin (1913-1995), an important figure in the world of 20th century art. Le Bois Orcan has been awarded the status of ‘Remarkable Garden’ for both its gardens and its grounds. Regular guided tours are available, please contact Bois Orcan for dates and times.
